The Game Reserve Hluhluwe / Imfolozi is situated a mere 54 km due East of St Lucia , this small tranquil village became South Africa’s first World Heritage Site in 1999 and has since become a top tourist destination.
Various reasons make this town not just your average overnight stop and many a traveller has said if only I had known I would have stayed for at least 2 to 3 nights. The reasons for is year round warm Indian Ocean currents contributing to warm waters for swimming or snorkeling at Cape Vidal now known as Isimangaliso Wetlands Park. This Park only 2 km away from St Lucia stretches all along the coast to Mozambique and includes Ponta de Oura as of recently.
The park offers the St Lucia Estuary with hundreds of Nile Crocodiles , Hippo’s an enormous amount of Bird species, entering the Park either by day or night ( Night Drive Safari ) one may encounter Rhino , Buffalo , Leopard or Chameleons on a Night Drive to mention just a few of the wildlife species found in the park.
By night it is a norm to encounter Hippo wandering the streets of St Lucia and the occasional sighting of Leopard in town is also a common occurrence.
Accommodation in St Lucia has become sought after as in high season most establishments are fully booked months ahead , various star grading B&B’s , Hotels and lodges are available for those traveling on a budget Hostels and various camping grounds are available.
This weeks review Budget Backpackers St Lucia.
The owners have recently revamped and upgraded the property with 4000 sq meters of tropical garden , the hostel can accommodate up to 35 clients dorm style , double rooms and family rooms are available. The grounds offer tented camp site or one can camp with your own camping gear , my choice rather camp in the tented camp as everything is already set up why bother with setting up. The ablutions are awesome set in African style poles and brick one quiclky establishes a feeling of true Africa , an enormous deck overlooking the garden for breakfast or why not try a South African Braai. Late afternoon Vervet monkeys make their way through the property and this causes mixed feelings of run and take pictures or make sure the tent is zipped up. The establishment offers additional free activities and this includes weekly Zulu dancing shows ( Feel those drums ) , daily transfers to and from the Beach , guided walks and sunset drives in search of the Hippo and ellusive Leopard , chameleons galore. All of the staff are friendly accommodating with a very efficient info desk. The hostel runs various specials on game drives to all of the neighbouring Parks ( Isimangaliso Wetlands Park ) as well as Hluhluwe / Imfolozi.
All of the rooms are well fitted , neat and clean and most definately value for money.
