Latest sightings in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi & Isimangaliso Wetlands Park

September updates, news and sightings.

The month of September as per norm has been windy in St Lucia as well as Hluhluwe Umfolozi, however the change from Winter to early Summer is evidant. This however means that the remaining water supplies do evaporate at a quicker rate. At present the water levels are once again at a low and therefore all water holes should be visited as animals most definately will frequent these areas. The Elephants have migrated to the southern section are various breeding herds have been encountered in the Umfolozi section of the park. We have witnessed a lot of Animal kills this month with Wild Dog the predominant. At present it is estimated that approxiamately 94 Wild Dogs may be found in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, this proves that the program is working. Other incredible sightings have included Lion hunting, Cheetah, Black Rhino to mention but a few.

As the rainy season slowly approaches us make sure that should you be in the parks to stay close to water sources for incredible sightings of the Big 5. Sontuli and No 17 remain very good areas for sightings at present.

The game rangers frequent the park regularly and should you come accross our open game drive safari vehicles please feel free to stop them and enquire what and where they have seen animals.

What to look out for over the next few weeks: Make sure that when crossing the Umfolozi river that it has not come down from inland as this system floods very easily and one may easily be stauck on the opposite side of the river.

What started of as a cold and chilly morning fast became an eventful day in both parks.

One of the Game drive safari vehicles left for the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve at 5:00 am yesterday morning , once they arrived at the gate a quick introduction and off they went in search of the Big5 , as the sun slowly crept out , and warmth its warmth emmited the park suddenly started to awaken. The game spotted yesterday included Elephants , Buffalo,Rhino,Leopard on the banks of the Umfolozi River and a great sighting of Hyena right next to the Safari game drive vehicle.

The safari to Isimangaliso Wetlands Park included Buffalo , Rhino and a wide variety of Antelope , some good snorkeling was enjoyed at Cape Vidal as well as the odd Whale sighting from both Cape Vidal and Mission rocks.

All the clients to the parks enjoyed the days safari and the weather was absolutely spectacular what else would be expected in Natal in Winter.

Until our next update enjoy

August 2010 Sighting’s

August in general was an awesome month for the African Big 5, we Heritage Tours & Safaris witnessed some incredible sightings some of these sightings included Wild Dog Kills ( 3 ), the migration of the Elephants from Hluhluwe back to the Umfolozi section, numerous sightings of Cheetah where recorded as well, Lion hunts the one most spectacular must have been when the African Lion hunted down a Giraffe, Lions and cubs and of course lots of Rhino sightings.

The Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Game Reserve generally in August is a dry month and this poses a advantage for those wanting to go on a safari as this is truelly the time to spot the carnivores at watering holes. The southern section the Umfolozi showcased the majority of the sightings, larger in size the southern section Umfolozi is less travelled but more rewarding. Should you be considering a safari to the Hluhluwe or Umfolozi it is recommended that you travel south. Once again the areas Sontuli, no 17 and hides are the hot spots in the Umfolozi.

At present we have Wild Dogs with pups and as can be forecast they will remain in the proximate area for some area as they continue to feed the cubs. Their are at present 4 cubs and they have finally come out of their den as they become stronger and explore more.

The Black Umfolozi River is still at a all time dry and this is evidant as the Elephants has resorted to digging for water in the river, therefore once again it is crucial that should you go on safari to the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Reserve to stay as close to the source of water.

Until our next report remember to go on Safari is rewarding.
